Somewhere deep in the PNW mountains — location undisclosed — the War Band met up to cut firewood from windfall timber on public land. This trip had everything: burnt second-growth Doug fir with beautiful straight grain, a good haul with the crew, and me finally getting the hang of the flick/flip splitting method with the Bucking Special.
I don’t reach for the hydraulic splitter nearly as much anymore — once you get this method right, you get a full split on every swing instead of pounding away at it. There’s a learning curve, but this axe is built for it. By the end of the day we had about 2 to 2.5 days’ worth of firewood split and ready to go.
Good crew, good wood, good day in the mountains.
